LAGOS, NIGERIA — British-Nigerian boxing superstar Anthony Joshua was injured Monday in a serious car crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that claimed the lives of two people, police and local officials confirmed.

The 36-year-old former world heavyweight champion, who recently scored a high-profile knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, was travelling in the rear seat of a Lexus SUV near Sagamu in Ogun State when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck along one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.

Ogun State authorities say two passengers in the vehicle died at the scene, and several others were injured. Joshua walked away from the crash with minor injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is being treated and described as conscious and stable by local officials.

Early investigations by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and police suggest the accident may have resulted from excessive speed and an unsafe overtaking manoeuvre, a leading cause of road fatalities in the region. Law enforcement sources have indicated that a full inquiry is underway to determine the sequence of events leading up to the crash.

Photos and videos circulating on social media show a dazed but alert Joshua at the crash site amid shattered glass and wreckage, prompting an outpouring of concern from fans across Africa and the globe.

Joshua, who maintains deep personal and family ties to Nigeria and spent part of his childhood in the country, had been in West Africa following his bout in the United States. A long-anticipated showdown with fellow British heavyweight Tyson Fury had been discussed for 2026, and his team says they will provide further updates on his condition as information becomes available.

Social media has been flooded with messages of support for Joshua and tributes to the victims. Some commenters have also raised questions about emergency response times, underscoring ongoing concerns about road safety infrastructure in Nigeria.

Our thoughts are with Anthony Joshua on his road to recovery and with the families affected by this tragic accident.
