Algiers: In preparation for Eid al-Adha in early June, Algeria plans to import one million sheep to stabilize market prices and meet the high demand for ritual sacrifices. This decision, announced by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, comes in response to severe droughts and economic challenges that have reduced local sheep production and driven up prices. The initiative aims to prevent the price surges and shortages experienced in previous years, making the tradition more affordable for Algerian families.
The government will issue an international tender to source the sheep, with the Ministries of Agriculture and Trade overseeing the process to ensure fair pricing and organized distribution. This approach reflects a proactive strategy to manage social unrest and inflation while maintaining governmental control.
Neighboring Morocco has also addressed similar issues, with its king suggesting that citizens could forgo the expensive tradition this year. These interventions highlight a regional effort to balance cultural practices with economic realities.
